The MUIMUN experience

I had an awesome experience attending the first Muenster University International Model United Nations (MUIMUN) that took place in Germany from April 1 –April 5 ’07 under the theme “Change Today – Shape Tomorrow”.

Muenster, City of Westphalian Peace, is surrounded by the inimitable atmosphere where more than 160 delegates from 40 countries came to participate in this conference, which simulated six different committees of UN. I was selected to represent India in the World Bank committee.

I still remember the day when I received an email from MUIMUN scholarship team stating that Dear Delegate from India, We are delighted to inform you that will be able to cover all your expenses viz. airfare, accommodation, food and conference fees. Receiving this mail it seemed like all my dreams had come true and indeed that seems to be the fact. I was ecstatic and did not even know which mountain in India to stand high on and scream my joy. I later came to know that I was among the 10 fortunate guys who got selected for this scholarship.

25 student delegates representing different countries had assembled in the World Bank committee to discuss two critical topics:

Topic A: Loan Proposals for International Bank for Rural Development (IBRD) Lending.
Topic B: Micro Financing in Times of Contemporary Challenges - Non-Profit vs. Commercial Micro Financing

My main motivation behind attending this conference got triggered when I did my DOCC project with Mahila Arthik Vikas Mahamandal, Mumbai where I got an opportunity to recommend strategies for providing microfinance loans for the upliftment of rural women.

I felt that discussing the microfinance topic at MUIMUN World Bank committee helped me to widen up my horizons & provided a platform where I exchanged ideas from different cultures and different countries.

I still cannot forget how we all debated on the loan proposal introduced by me as the delegate of India, which talked about IT investments in agriculture sector of India. We also had a lot of heated discussions on proposal from delegations from Indonesia, Pakistan and Russian Federation. At the end of the day almost all of us were totally stressed out. However MUIMUN organizers did a great job of organizing Global Village (International Night), where the delegates were asked to bring specialties from their home countries to let the others share their culture, which actually gave me a chance to see those amazing performances from different traditions. I also got an opportunity to sing a bollywood song ”Tanha Dil” and I think audience liked it :-)

The best part came when the committee members and the Chair chose me as the delegate with the most outstanding and exceptional contribution to the committee. Delegate representing USA and Delegation from Russian Federation were awarded the 2nd and 3rd prize respectively at the closing ceremony.

I was also asked by the MUIMUN organizing committee to deliver a speech at the closing ceremony on behalf of all the delegates sharing my experiences and got a standing ovation for that. That was the most joyous moment of my life.

Finally it all ended with a dance party at Cuba Nova disc and I packed my bags to explore another beautiful place Paris, City of Love and the City of Romance!!!! Was there for 4 days and saw some of the best French architectures - Eiffel Tower, Musée du Louvre (Da Vinci Code fame), Chateau de Versailles (Royal palace), The Sacré-Coeur Basilica (Cathedral located at Monmartre Hill), Notre- Dame Cathedral to name a few.

Last but not the least from this conference I took back to my country all those sweet moments, which I spent in one of the Europe’s most beautiful city Muenster, I took back all the learning, which I have got from attending the MUIMUN. And yes I took back the friendship of my fellow delegates, which I will cherish throughout my life.

Cheers,

Somansh

Post Sanction: One day @ SBI andheri (21.apr.2006)
******************************************************

Trivia: SBI andheri branch is in frnt of Shopper's Stoppe, S.V Road.
Caveat: The slowest process is 'opening of s.b a/c'..do it last.
First thing: As soon as you reach the bank, call up Ms. Bina [loan insurance] and fix an
appointment in the next 45 min (she will need some time to travel to andheri)

Docs to carry:
1> margin dd 2> processin fee dd 3> original passport 4> 2 fotocopies of passport
5> 2 copies of PAN 6> 2 fotos 7> cheque book 8> spjimr lokal addres proof or offer letter
9> Your Nominee's DOB (no doc, jus info)

People/tasks: order of events as listed..
*****************************************

1) Mr. Gore/Mr.Khadamkar: Mr.Gore was on leave. Went to Mr. Khadamkar. He asked me to go meet Ms. Manju.

Ms.Manju [loan term execution]: Affable. You will have no probs here. my agreement papers wer franked n ready [trivia: if not franked, u hv to get it franked from nearby bank of rajasthan -> 300 bucks].
* giv her margin dd n proc fee dd. documentation fee is 400 bucks. i had included this in my processing fee dd.
* sign d docs
* u need to tell her abt the figures for INR and USD dd's
- i asked her to make INR dd for 1,00,000 + 28,000 + 36,000 = 164,000
so tht spjimr fee instalment # 1 + hostel + mess fees r covered

Exit criteria: time ~30 min
* copy of term agreement duly signed by Mr.Khadamkar
* get ur 9 digit loan a/c no.
* SBI transfers INR amount to spjimr

2) Ms. Karina [forex]: u wil hv no probs here.
* she will help u fill up 4 docs.
* dont forget to give her ur loan a/c no. ... she debits amt frm d loan a/c for makin a USD dd. form wil lie there if u dont provide this.
* ask her when cud you come and collect USD DD (avg. 2 days)
- on that day, one of you who wud have come to sign docs can collect DDs of rest of your friends.
- note down DD nos v/s names - you will neways come to spjain in step # 5
- deposit DDs in our office

Exit criteria: time - ~ 20 min
* no receipts here

3) Ms. Bina [insurance]: u wil hv no probs here [tho' she shocked me wid googlies like 'y cant u keep bangalore hutch num in roamin whn u shift to mumbai..for all of d course period! i told her i cud do it if sbi gives me a 'sbi caller loan' :) ]

* fill up form
* giv copy of passport
* giv cheque/cash

Exit criteria: time - ~ 20 min
* receipt wil b ready in 10 days. she wil retain it wid herself. v can collect it later.

4) Mr. Deshpande [new s.b a/c]: You can revisit rk narayan omnibus cover to cover if u like to..

* fill up form
* 2 fotos
* copy of passport
* spjimr offer letter [in lieu of spjimr lokal addrs proof] - Ms. Bina helped me in negotiatin this wid deshpande.

After all this negotiation..new a/c openin app stopped workin. they blamed it on 'slow n/w'..but d error msg was abt unmatched data n was pretty fast in throwin exception. v tried to contact their IT support group..d reply was tht it was first of its kind error! but, it was quite apparent tht thr was wrong sequencin of data in one of their tables. hmmmm... spent 3 hrs...no luck. managed to convince him to keep my docs and create a new a/c whnever the app starts workin again. He obliged n took down my mobile num. Have not got call in the last one year :)

Exit criteria: time - ~ 3 hrs
* new s.b a/c num
* anyways, s.b a/c can be opened later...no worries. In order to start paying interest amount, you need a s.b a/c + your insurance premia get debited from this a/c

5) Went straight to spjain

Dipali ma'am [hostel confirmation]:

* confirmed hostel requirement
* gave date of arrival, 28.may
* also, she asked me to write down my landline num in VT doc

COB

****************************************************************************************************************
* NOTE: wot follows is for guys who had projected a loan amt tht included lappy's value...but, later decided no need to spend money on lappy while we already own one.

More importantly, the question is 'how does sbi decide the INR amt to be disbursed to spjimr as regards first instalment?'

Issue: sbi does not kno whthr iam gonna avail hostel facility/lappy.. so default is: 1 lac [fee]

Ms. Manju asked me whthr she shud include 28k [hostel] and 35k for lappy. i said tht lappy is not required. but, i asked her to 'include' 28k [hostel] + 36k for mess fees.
So, our input helps them decide the value of loan disbursal as regards first instalment to spjimr.

* wot happens to 35k [or any amt] that is not utilized during 24 months?
- this amt is not 'released' at all.So, NO INTEREST on such UNUSED amt.

Cheers,
Ganga

10. If interest is not paid durin moratorium, wot's d penalty?

Interview with Dr.Parviz, Managing Director - MIT India Program

Dr. Parviz Ghandforoush, Professor, Dept of Business Information Technology, Managing Director of the Master of Information Technology program, and Director of the Northern Virginia Center M.B.A. Program teaches the students of PGDSM MIT, SPJIMR a course on Web Applications and Electronic Commerce. Dr. Parviz has over 25 years of research, teaching, administrative, and professional experience in information technology and management science and is the co-author of the textbook "Management Science for Decision Makers".

He was here at our SPJIMR campus for the contact classes of the program from 16th to 20th April 2007. To read more about his publications and research interests click here.

In his interview to our student reporter, Dr. Parviz talks about his views on the importance of the convergence of Managerial and technical know-how and how beneficial is the dual degree program, PGDSM MIT, to the students and the organizations. He points out that more and more organizations are looking for people who have the blend of managerial and technical knowledge.

He says that the students of PGDSM MIT offered by SPJIMR, in collaboration with Virginia Tech, develop the ability to think about the next innovation and technology in the industry and contribute as proactive managers to the organization through the courses designed by SPJIMR and VT. Been in this program since inception, Dr. Parviz says that the program as of today has evolved from what it was three years ago. The evolution is because of the transformation of demand and change in students’ outlook according to Dr.Parviz. He adds saying that the students of MIT-India program are prepared to a much greater extent for the course.

Dr. Parviz says the students of this course get an opportunity to learn from professors who have done high level research and have published renowned papers. The key advantage of this course, he quotes that, is SPJIMR and VT being the leaders in their respective fields offer the students first hand knowledge of both the worlds. He also talks about the Personal IDentifier (PID) provided to the students of Virginia Tech being valid for life time and how the students can avail the facilities using their PIDs.

Dr.Parviz finds the Indian students better off and greatly prepared for the course and pats SPJIMR for its screening process. To read more on what Dr. Parviz spoke to the student reporter please download the file from the following link.

I observed at Graduation Ceremony...

Dear PGDSM-MIT03 participants,

I asked myself a question, looking towards your batch, 'Can I try you out?'. I didn't wait too long, or for too many people to ratify the answer in my mind 'Yes, i will". You proved exceptional, in the quality of support you gave me, for making the SPJIMR Graduation Ceremony what it was; we all know that.

I noticed a few things with pride; the way the PGDSM-MIT03 volunteers kept a stone face, stowed away emotions behind, and put forward a humble and extremely alert disposition, esp during absolute crunch situations. You have a way, a style that I felt is unique and outstanding. Now on, you will have to work even harder to sustain it. And bet, you will.

Before I end, I mustn't forget to mention one more person, Sandeep Sharma (pgdbm-1). Simply put, he was the complete 'Auto-pilot device', for the Graduation Ceremony. And mind you, this 'device' even innovates on its own. Brilliant!

Thanks a million.

let the warmth of the morning rays,

let the mirror on your bedside wall,
reflect the happy you!
