The NIMITT festival is the initiative of PGDSM-MIT batch at SP Jain. This program is jointly conducted by SP Jain & Virginia Tech (USA). The event was attended by top corporates and business schools across the country over two days on 13th & 14th July 07. The theme of the event was ‘Unleashing what lies beyond and beneath’.

The highlights of the event were:

2.Presidential address by CA MD (Mr. Ninad Karpe)
3.Tark Vitark – Panel discussion
4.Anubhav – Corporate cultural event
5.Expert talk – Future of Indian Business Environment

7.On the spot case study competition by Social Consultancy Group

It was remarkable to note that the students were extremely helpful in spite of their nerve racking schedules. The high energy levels of students, staff and attending corporates were clearly visible and the campus was abuzz with activity.

SCG on the spot case study drew tremendous response from the participants. Around thirty submitted their views on how to tackle the challenges mentioned in the case study. The responses were evaluated on the basis of innovative thought process and following two teams were selected for the award.

First Prize - SPJIMR - Anand Chourikar, Valiapan and Mohit Shah

Second Prize - SPJIMR - Kaustubh Varde, Aliazgar Abbasi, Aditya Srivastava & Nischal Shah

Although many students came forward and congratulated the SCG team for the innovative cost & organizational model, it will be visible in the coming weeks on how many participants will be actually interested in joining us as members and taking the SCG mantle forward.

About SCG

Social Consultancy Group was founded in the year 2006 by IT professionals who wanted to give back something to the society but did not know the ways and means. The thought process invariably shifted from donation, to working at the grass root levels to a final concept which was workable and sustainable.

The concept revolves around the provision of IT services & consultancy services to corporates by using the available latent IT pool interested in social activities. Our core mission is to holistically contribute to India’s socio-economic development by creating a corpus to fund diverse NGOs.

We aim to "ignite social change" by harnessing the latent pool of knowledge professionals to bring about social welfare and make India's growth inclusive to all sections of the society.

“What makes a good software engineer: The making of a winning breed.”

That was what TCS, in partnership with Nimitt ’07, sought out to find the answer to, through ‘Tatva’ – the paper presentation event. Each of the finalists of the event had a different dimension to add to the topic.

Anurag, from the junior batch of PGDSM-MIT shared his views on the topic too. He spoke of:

· Institutionalizing a software engineering culture in a company.
· Mapping of competencies to work related requirements in IT Industry.
· Sharing of Industry best practices
· Qualities and traits of a good software engineer
· IT Environment and potential in Brazil and China
· Amelioration of recruitment and induction process including collaboration with academia.

His suggestions, research and presentation were highly commended by the jury from TCS. In fact, he and a few other finalists from IIM - K and SPJIMR were asked to delve into the matter further.

Together, in collaboration with TCS, they have been asked to research on

• employee appraisal and recruitment models
• keys to improve satisfaction, loyalty, productivity, and competency
• trends in upcoming sectors in China and Brazil.
  
  Prof. Lata Dhir from SPJIMR will be guiding them in their endeavours and they hope to complete it within a span of three months.

Be an Elephant, not a Tiger!

"Be an elephant, not a tiger"- this was one of our learnings in our first Macroeconomics Session today!! For those of you who are wondering what this is all about here goes...

Prof. Preetha George asked us to come up with 10 points on a case study about challenges faced by the Indian economy. After some brainstorming, groups came up with pertinent points of their analysis and wrote them on the board. The icing on the cake was when the last group brought their idea of "India should not sprint like a tiger but rather amble along like an elephant". The reason being an overhyped and fast paced economy is not a positive indicator for India's growth, instead it is better to be like the elephant with high stamina and persistance.

The creative description by Rajat, Gagan, KrishnaMohan, Nishant, Arjun and Anurag had the class rolling over with laughter!
What a start to Macroeconomics! :)

A visit to 'Bangalore International Airport Ltd.' project site

Ravjeet Singh (PGDSM MIT 2005-2007) is now Program Manager and is handling both Off-Shore and on-Shore part for Bangalore International Airport Project (BIAL) for IT Systems and Communication. He is handling 9 projects/sub projects which include SAP implementation.

Projects Include:

1. AODB (Airport Operational Database)
2. FIDS (Flight Information Display Systems)
3. LMS (Location Management Systems)
4. CUTE (Common User Check In Terminal System)
5. Networking (Active & Passive) LAN, WAN, Wifi, MPSS
6. VoIP System (PABX Communication System)
7. TRMS (Trunk Mobile Radio System)
8. Hotline System SAP (6 modules; FI, CO, MM, SD,..)
9. BRS (Baggage Reconciliation System)

The whole Project cost is now more than 9 Million Euros (approx 60 cr. INR including on-shore services).
